JDUC Update January (AMS and SGPS)
The AMS and SGPS Executive teams wish to update their members on the JDUC Revitalization Project and move in progress.
As you may know, the reopening of the JDUC has faced several delays, resulting in miscommunication and frustration as projected opening dates have been postponed with little notice. We share in your disappointment and frustration over this situation.
The AMS and SGPS are part of the project’s steering committee, where we advocate for the vision and needs of students. However, we do not manage the project itself or control its timelines. That is the role of the University. While construction delays are not uncommon, the repeated promises of opening dates followed by last-minute delays have been regrettable.
Sequence of delays
May/June 2024 (original target for occupancy)
- Delay to August 1, 2024 (informed late July 2024 Steering Committee)
- Delay to Nov 29, 2024 (informed Aug 1, 2024 Steering Committee)
- Delay to Jan 20, 2025 (informed Jan 9, 2025 Steering Committee)
At this point, the project is significantly delayed, creating additional challenges to completion, such as labour shortages. As a result, we no longer have confidence in any projected completion dates. Following our most recent discussions, we have made the decision to stop planning around tentative timelines. Instead, we will wait until the building is fully ready before transitioning into the space. This decision was made to avoid the repeated packing and unpacking for anticipated move-in dates, which has proven to be a poor use of valuable staff time and resources—time and resources that are better directed toward serving our members.
At this time there is no date set for project completion, a student association move, or public opening. While the university may share updates on anticipated completion dates, we will only provide an update once we are confident in a confirmed opening date.
What does this mean for you?
For now, nothing changes. We will continue to provide our services remotely or from LaSalle or Rideau.
We are just as eager as you are to move into the revitalized JDUC, which promises to be a beautiful and functional space for students. We will notify you as soon as the building is ready, and the move is finalized. Until then, we remain committed to supporting you and ensuring continuity in our services.
We will keep you informed as soon as we receive any significant updates.
Information specific to the AMS will be shared below
Clubs expecting to move into the JDUC will receive information about their move directly from the Clubs commission.
Services are in direct communication with direct reports about moving into the JDUC. For now, they will continue to operate out of their current locations in rideau and the Queen’s Centre.
Queen’s Pub – Restaurant & Bar has been particularly harmed by the delays, as the Queen’s Pub is a more complex build and operation. The Queen’s Pub management team monitors the daily progress of the JDUC Project and anxiously looks ahead to a Grand Opening Date we can share.
For those interested in more details, President Rocchi will address AMS assembly on January 20th. Assembly will be held in Goodes Hall 108, starting at 6pm. Please direct any questions about assembly to .
