One of the AMS’s core mandates is to provide opportunities for student development. Through every role across the organization, our employees help deliver the programs, services, and initiatives that empower students to learn, lead, and succeed.
We employ over 670 students in both waged and honoraria positions, offering opportunities across general, supervisory, assistant managerial, and senior managerial roles. We also offer more than 200 volunteer positions for students looking to get involved in the Queen’s and AMS community. Throughout the year, the AMS offers professional development opportunities focused on leadership, communication, wellness, financial literacy, and career readiness. From specialized training and workshops to conferences and networking opportunities, we invest in the continued growth of every member of our team.
At the beginning of Senior Manager training, all Senior Managers participate in a Predictive Index group session designed to build strong working relationships and foster effective team collaboration. The session is facilitated by Mitch LePage, Managing Principal of Predictive Success Corporation.

In addition, select Senior Managers participate in professional development opportunities offered by the Student Experience Office. A delegation of Senior Managers also attends the Rector’s Office annual Student Leader Development Conference, taking place this year on September 18 and 19.
All Staff and Volunteers of the AMS have access to the Peer Support Centre provided training ‘Supporting Peers without Burning Out’
All Volunteers, General Staff, and Supervisors receive Professional Development opportunities at minimum once a year that is coordinated by your commission/office/service management team. Contact your manager for further details.
The AMS is committed to recognizing and celebrating the contributions of our student staff and volunteers. Recognizing Volunteers
Each year, the AMS recognizes the dedication and commitment of the volunteers who generously give their time to enhance the student experience. In addition to staff and volunteer appreciation events throughout the year, all AMS volunteers receive a Volunteer Appreciation Bag filled with gifts as a token of our gratitude. These bags are distributed during the late Winter semester.
Student health and wellness is a priority of the AMS. As one of the largest student employers at Queen’s University and in Kingston, the AMS is committed to creating a workplace that is both psychologically and physically safe. We strive to provide employees with the resources and support they need to care for their mental and physical well-being through a holistic approach.

Financial well-being plays an important role in overall mental and physical health, particularly during the current affordability crisis. The AMS is committed to helping employees build financial confidence by providing access to resources, educational opportunities, and practical tools to strengthen their financial literacy.

The AMS is partnering with Alumo to help employees better understand and access the benefits available through their student health and dental plan. These sessions will provide information on health services, preventive and restorative dental coverage, prescription drug benefits, Rexall discounts, gender-affirming care, and Empower Me, which offers confidential support for mental health, financial planning, career planning, and more.

The Peer Support Centre is hosting Wellness Walks for AMS staff and volunteers to connect with one another, enjoy the outdoors, and take a break from the workday.
