Fall 2026 AMS Election and Referenda Proclomation

Dear AMS Constituents,

 

Welcome back to Kingston! Please consider and review this official notice opening the Fall 2026 Elections & Referenda Season! This Fall 2026 season we will be hosting a Referenda, and both an Undergraduate Trustee and Rector Election.

 

In Fall 2026, the election and referenda season will see the following open:

 

Referendum

A Fee Referendum – to continue, increase, or establish new Student Activity Fees. Please note that the SAF process is broken into two phases.

 

The process diagrammed: Validation Stage (Student Activity Review Committee) –> Referenda (Vote by Constituents).

 

All key information required to submit can be found in the Validation Package and visiting the Internal Affairs Help Desk where the Internal & External Validation Form and Budget Templates are made available. – this was changed now

 

The deadline to submit the required forms outlined in the Validation Package is September 18th, 2026.

Elections

 

Trustee Election

The Undergraduate Student Trustee represents undergraduate students to the Queen’s University Board of Trustees and is a member of the University Culture Committee. The Board of Trustees governs all the financial and strategic matters of Queen’s University. The Board has 25 members, 3 of whom are students: the Graduate Student Trustee, the Rector, and the Undergraduate Student Trustee. It is the job of the Undergraduate Student Trustee to provide a student perspective to the work of the Board.

Rector Election

The Rector, a position rooted in the Scottish academic tradition and passed down from the University of Edinburgh is the third officer of the University, after the Chancellor and Principal, and is the only officer elected entirely by the student body.

 

The role serves to represent all students as a voting member on the Board of Trustees and as an official observer at Senate; advocates for student needs, facilitates dialogue with senior administration, and participates in university committees.

 

Additionally, the Rector also co-presides over Convocation alongside the Chancellor and Principal to deliver remarks to graduating classes, and oversees the prestigious Tricolour Award process.
