Before You Celebrate: What to Know for St. Patrick’s Day at Queen’s

Pusheen: Have a Delicious St. Patrick's Day

With one of the busiest weekends of the year approaching, it’s important to know how to celebrate in a safe and responsible manner. Keep reading to learn about some key regulations you should keep in mind, specific enforcement measures in place this weekend, and who you should contact if you have a safety concern.

University District Safety Initiative (UDSI)

Over the St. Patrick’s Day weekend, the University District Safety Initiative (UDSI) will be in effect from March 13th to the morning of March 18th. During this time, Kingston Police and City Bylaw Officers will be more present in the areas surrounding campus, in order to enforce regulations related to nuisance parties and public disturbances. Any individuals that violate Kingston’s bylaws may receive either a court summons or a financial penalty.

Examples of violations that may result in fines include:

  • Hosting or organizing a nuisance part: $2,000
  • Refusing to leave a property when directed: $500
  • Entering or using a road that has been closed: $500
  • Noise violations: $100-$200
  • Ignoring posted park signage: $200
  • Underage possession or consumption of alcohol
  • Having open alcohol containers in public spaces
  • Public intoxication

In some cases, incidents that result in municipal charges may also be reported to the university and reviewed under Queen’s Student Code of Conduct.

On-Campus Supports

A number of campus resources will be available over the St. Patrick’s Day weekend to help support students.

The Campus Observation Room will operate overnight during the weekend for individuals who may require support related to substance use. Additionally, students can access a Health Resources Map, which outlines locations across campus where medical assistance is available if needed.
