The President is responsible for the external representation of the AMS and is ultimately accountable for ensuring the fulfillment of the Society’s mandate and mission.
They represent the majority of opinion of the university’s undergraduate student body to the administration and general public.
The President sits on the AMS Board of Directors. They are also an ex-officio voting member of the University Senate, where they can advocate on behalf of undergraduate students. They also run Presidents Caucus, a closed-door meeting with the presidents of every faculty society.
The president also has the responsibility of overseeing the governance of the Society, in addition to the offices that manage the day-to-day happenings of the Society.
With my experience at the AMS serving as a commissioner for three years, Board Chair last year; as well being a President and Chair for my communities Economic Development Corporation; I was confident I could improve and advance student needs for the AMS.
Particularly, I have a passion for advocating on non-market and affordable housing, changing the SOP section of the university’s Alcohol Policy, resourcing our core-governance offices further like elections and judicial affairs, seeing larger and fun events at the JDUC, standardizing market research, and procuring more student discounts from relevant local services.
I am excited to Chair two Working Groups stricken by Team DAE. The first is the Affordability Action Group which aims to continue concentrated, accounted for, and impactful affordability efforts across the organization. The second is the JDUC Engagement Group, which aims to coordinate larger JDUC events and improvements throughout the year. Initiatives include a JDUC Haunted Mansion, JDUC Student Fest, as well as looking towards wall installments and expanding green space.
Furthermore, I am excited to represent student voices as this year’s Municipal Election, Alcohol Policy Review, and Student Housing Strategy Development brings a pivotal time for advocacy, and bringing student perspectives to both the City and the University.
I hope to continue developing my skills around governance, leadership, and strategic advocacy. Ultimately, I want to see out the purpose of the role: be a direct and positive impact for students and the organization of the AMS.
Always reflect on the capacity and responsibility commitment; these executive roles are very time consuming and require students to be ready to make the final decision on many things. Ensure you are comfortable being held accountable and to face scrutiny on your decisions.
The executive’s tone, awareness, and aptitude within the AMS, the student body, and our university ultimately affect the outcomes and success from the AMS for students.
For your campaign, I encourage anyone running to concisely communication your values, the future you see for the AMS, and your tangible goals that students can look forward to.
