St. Patrick’s Day: Safe ways to celebrate!
St. Patrick’s Day at Queen’s usually evokes images of BORGs in plastic jugs, and drunk crowds on University Avenue. But if all this partying isn’t your vibe, or you want to actually remember your Tuesday morning, Kingston has events that are alcohol-free and just as fun! Here’s a guide to a safe and sober St. Patty’s:
Want to enjoy some vibrant live music? The Mahones is a legendary Irish-punk band playing at the The Broom Factory on the evening of the 17th. It’s an inclusive, accessible space where the focus is 100% on the energy of the music. If you want to celebrate earlier, head to The Spire on Saturday, March 14 to hear the Celtic Kitchen Party perform. It’s high-energy, community-focused, and a great spot to bring a group of friends who just want to dance.
If you’ve ever wanted to try traditional Irish dancing without the pressure of a stage, the Harp of Tara Irish Society will be hosting a St. Patrick’s Celebration, including a Ceili. A Ceili is a traditional social dance with a “caller” who teaches you the steps as you go. This event also includes a traditional Irish dinner, and live Irish music featuring the Seventh Town Band and Irish dancers. It’s social, fast-paced, and filling, and no alcohol needed!
Feeling like enjoying some comfort food instead of blacking out? Head to the Italo-Canadian Club for their St. Patty’s Pasta Night. On March 17th, enjoy all-you-can-eat pasta featuring their signature bolognese sauce and a special green pesto from 4:30 PM to 6:30 PM. This delicious getaway is the perfect way to spend your St. Patty’s.
