Internal Affairs Office Hand Off: New Secretariat, Who Dis?

Meet Emily Henrique: Secretariat

Emily Henrique is a dedicated advocate for student governance, and this year, she steps into the role of Secretary of Internal Affairs with a powerful combination of insight, curiosity, and initiative. Now in her third year at Queen’s, Emily is pursuing a double major in Political Studies and Global Development, along with a Law Certificate—an academic path that aligns perfectly with the responsibilities of her new position.

Emily’s enthusiasm for leadership runs deep. “I’ve always been ridiculously involved in extracurriculars, student government,” she says. “It’s such a unique opportunity that we as students get to have a say in the decisions that impact us—how our schools run.” For her, this role isn’t just about policy—it’s about building trust, ensuring fairness, and working alongside passionate peers to create lasting change.

As Secretary of Internal Affairs, Emily oversees the Internal Affairs Office within the AMS, which is responsible for the civic, legislative, and judicial pillars of student governance. The office ensures that elections, assembly procedures, and policy decisions are carried out with transparency and integrity. While each branch operates with some autonomy, “the Secretariat ensures that we’re upholding policy and procedure with transparency and good governance at the forefront.”

She’s especially looking forward to Election Reveal Night, an initiative inspired by other faculties that aims to turn a standard email announcement into something exciting. “Instead of just sending out a dry email, we’re planning something that gets people talking,” she shares. The event will feature refreshments, introductions to the election process, and a live reveal—“like a big drum roll, so people get excited about it.” It’s all part of her vision to make student democracy more accessible, visible, and fun.

Beyond the AMS, Emily is just as dynamic. She enjoys reading, painting, thrifting, and watching historical documentaries in her downtime. Her go-to Common Ground order? A comforting hot chocolate— perfect on chilly Kingston days. With her thoughtful approach to leadership and her commitment to transparency, Emily is already making an impact in the role. Whether she’s planning engagement events or reviewing AMS policies, she’s driven by the same goal: helping students feel more connected to the institutions that serve them.
