AMS Assembly Recognizes Ruth Osunde

Dear students,

On Monday, February 10th, 2025 the AMS Assembly, unanimously voted in favour of the following motion moved by Secretariat Garabedian and Commissioner Amer.

“That the AMS Assembly recognize Ruth Osunde as the first Black woman to serve as an AMS executive and the first Black Vice-President of University Affairs, and extend its sincere gratitude and appreciation for her contributions to the Alma Mater Society.”

This motion was read at the Assembly dedicated for Black History and Futures Month. We presented this motion to recognize Ruth Osunde as the first Black woman to serve as an AMS executive, and the first Black VPUA in the Society. We know the role of an executive can be demanding, exciting and sometimes thankless – with many long hours, and challenging moments.

Ruth, we want to recognize your commitment and dedication to the Society, as well as your contributions, many of which go unnoticed. Every person brings a unique, invaluable and cherished perspective to the Society, and yours is one that is long overdue.

We know that there is not one of us who is perfect, and yet despite our imperfections, every voice, and every experience guides the Society in the direction of best serving our students, and community. We are pleased that the Assembly has recognized and extended gratitude and appreciation for everything Ruth has done for the Society both within her role as Vice President of University Affairs, and in her previous role as Social Issues Commissioner (internal).

Student leadership is not easy on anyone, and we admire your ability to overcome personal and systemic barriers.

As we celebrate Black History and Futures Month, we invite everyone to reflect on the contributions of Black students to campus life, and student government; as well as the spaces we create for amplifying and including their experiences and perspectives at every level.

Sincerely,
Jana Amer & Sylvie Garabedian
Commissioner of Social Issues (Internal)
Secretary of Internal Affairs
2024-2025
