STRIVE: Students Taking Responsible Initiatives for a Viable Environment
What is STRIVE?
STRIVE is a committee of the Sustainability Office of the AMS. Our mission is to increase environmental awareness and promote positive changes in attitude and behaviour toward environmental issues by organizing and promoting various events.
How can YOU get involved?
STRIVE holds weekly meetings in Mac-Corry D211 on Wednesdays from 5:30-6:20. Volunteers are encouraged to come and participate in decision making and organization of events.
What are the goals of STRIVE?
STRIVE aims to:
• Increase environmental awareness among the entire Queen's community
• Promote positive changes in attitudes and behaviours towards the environment and environmental issues
• Complete tangible projects that directly benefit the environment
What does STRIVE do?
We have developed a tentative schedule of events for the 2007-2008 school year, which will be discussed during the first couple meetings. Of course, as a student committee, we are always open to new ideas above and beyond what is listed on the schedule.
STRIVE is already actively organizing three main events:
1. Planet Earth showings at the Tea Room
Come to the Tea Room on Tuesday nights to watch the BBC documentary Planet Earth
Schedule:
Tuesday, November 13: Mountains
Tuesday, November 20: CANCELLED
Tuesday, November 27: Freshwater
2. Residence Energy Conservation Challenge
Beginning February 4, 2008, residence buildings will be pitted against each other to reduce the most energy until March 7. Queen’s residences will also be competing against residences at the University of Guelph and the University of Waterloo in association with the Sierra Youth Coalition.
Contact STRIVE for more information and stay tuned in the new year, when we begin advertising for this never-before-done-in-Canada competition!
3. Student Housing Energy Conservation Challenge
To parallel the competition in the residences, there will also be a competition for the student housing area to reduce the most energy.
Contact STRIVE for more information and stay tuned in the new year, when we being advertising.
STRIVE is planning other events as well, including:
• World Wildlife Fund Adopt-an-Animal sale
• Environmental rally
• Environmental awareness campaign
• Pollution awareness night involving Ellis Observatory
STRIVE will also participate in other activities, such as:
• Monthly Sustainability Forums run through the Sustainability Office
• Earth Week collaboration events
Beyond these specific events, STRIVE will:
• Hold weekly meetings to discuss environmental issues and organize events
• Hold social events to promote group cohesion
• Organize fundraisers to raise money to pursue bigger and better events
• Help promote other environmental activities in and around the Queen's and Kingston communities
What has STRIVE done this year?
Events already held this year include:
• TD Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup
• Plastic bag awareness day
• Planet Earth – From Pole to Pole showing at the Tea Room
• WWF holiday sale
• Posters for Global Climate Change Day of Action Rally
