The success of our Commission depends on the contribution of dedicated, motivated volunteers, so if you’re willing to devote your talents and gain valuable experience relevant in anything from law and social work to public-interest advocacy, this is the place for you. The Breakfast CubThe Breakfast Club is a peer program that allows Queen's students to spend time in elementary schools and serve breakfast to at-risk youth in Kingston. Time is spent making breakfast and socializing with those in the program, so both the kids and their buddies can get their days off to a good start. This commitee aims to provide a healthy social, physical, and psychological enivronment for growth for our volunteers and for children in the program. GenerationsGenerations provides volunteer opportunities with seniors in the Kingston community. Volunteers buddy up with seniors at Elizabeth Cottage with the Adopt-a-Grandparent program. Generations also organizes Silver Bells and Senior Prom, two dinner-dances for Kingston seniors. High School LiaisonHigh School Liaison has two roles. First, it runs Degree-for-a-Day, in which high school students from Kingston spend a day at Queen’s attending lectures, visiting residence, eating at the cafeteria, and partaking in other activities. Second, High School Sendbacks allows Queen’s students to visit their high schools and talk to high school students about applying for and attending university. HY- School Projects and Endeavors (HYPE)HYPE is a tutoring program at Kingston high schools. Once a week, Queen’s students tutor and edit papers for high school students in Kingston. KaleidoscopeKaleidoscope is a buddy program that allows Queen’s students to spend an hour with an elementary school buddy once a week. Half of the time together is spent tutoring the child, and half of the time is spent socializing and doing crafts. Municipal Issues CommitteeThe Municipal Issues Committee lobbies issues like snow removal and informs students about current municipal issues facing them, including the rollout of the Green Bin waste program to the student housing area. Student Property Assessment Team (SPAT)SPAT provides free home inspections to Queen’s students. Because SPAT volunteers are trained by the City to learn all Kingston property standards, they can tell students if their houses are up to code. United Way CommitteeThe United Way Committee fundraises to donate to the United Way Kingston, Frontenac, Lennox and Addington branch. If you’re interested in joining any of these committees, see the “Volunteer” page of the “Get Involved” section of the Human Resources webpage. |
