Undergraduate students registered in the following Faculties/Schools:

who are registered in the equivalent of 3.0 or more Arts and Science courses during the Fall and Winter session are assessed mandatory and optional student activity and faculty society fees. Students registered in a fee weight of 1.5 or more courses in one term only, are charged a prorated portion. Undergraduate students who would not normally be charged student activity fees may opt-in at registration if they wish to participate in and have access to undergraduate student government activities and services. MBA (Science and Technology) students are also assessed undergraduate student activity fees. Note that adding courses can result in activity fee charges and that a one-term registration in 1.5 or more courses results in a prorated fee charge.

Exemptions:

  • Students 65 years or older
  • Students registered exclusively in correspondence, off-campus or evening courses

NOTE: All students registered in at least one course, but falling below the 3.0  mandatory/optional fee assessment threshold, will be assessed a flat mandatory $35.50 fee (50% of the full-time mandatory assessment of $71.00) in support of the capital costs of the Queen’s Centre - the new student life facility. Queen’s-Trent education students are exempted from this fee.

What Am I Assessed?

Undergraduate students are assessed each of the following:

  • AMS Mandatory Fees - $499.30
  • AMS Optional Fees - $71.85
  • AMS Dental Plan - $89.76
  • AMS Health Plan - $110.00
  • Applicable Faculty Society Fee – see listing on this site

How Are Student Activity Fees Established?

Virtually all student activity fees are established by majority votes in campus-wide referenda. In order for a fee to appear on a referendum ballot it must collect signatures in support from 5% of AMS members and/or be approved for the ballot by the elected legislative branch of the student government (AMS Assembly). Virtually all student activity fees are subject to review by referendum every three years, giving students an opportunity to either confirm or reject support for individual fees.

Opting Out Of Optional Student Activity Fees

Any student wishing to opt-out of any optional AMS or Faculty-Specific Fee, with the exception of the AMS Health and Dental Plans (see separately) may do so on-line:

BETWEEN SEPTEMBER 14 and SEPTEMBER 30, 2009 through the AMS website: http://www.myams.org/

Students who will be off-campus (e.g. on an exchange program) during this time period may opt-out by notifying the AMS Information Officer (see below) by September 30, 2009.
Students enrolled in the winter term only, and assessed prorated optional fees, may opt-out of any or all of these fees by notifying the AMS Information Officer by January 31, 2010.

Refunding Student Activity Fees by University Registrar

Students opting out of any Optional Student Activity Fee will receive a credit to their university student account.  Refunds will be issued only if all tuition and other fees and/or debts are paid in full so that the opt-out results in a credit balance in the student’s account. Questions concerning refunds should be directed to Office of the University Registrar, not the AMS. Students who formally withdraw from the University must submit their student card to the relevant Faculty Office or Office of the University Registrar to obtain a refund of both mandatory and optional student activity fees. Partial refunds for mandatory student activity fees are calculated after the full refunding period, except for the AMS Health and Dental Plans which are non-refundable after the opt-out period. Optional student activity fee refunds are calculated according to the following schedule of withdrawal dates: 100% to September 30; 50% between September 26 and October 10; 25% between October 11 and November 6. No refunds are given after November 7.

AMS Health and Dental Plans

The AMS Health Plan fee is distinct from the mandatory Student Health (Services) fee. The AMS Health and Dental Plans, two separate and distinct plans, both administered by the undergraduate student government, have been designed for and by students to meet their needs. The plans protect students with affordable, easy-to-use health and/or dental coverage for a full 12 months, meaning that the plans remain in effect during the summer after classes are completed.

Please visit website:  www.myams.org/health for full details on the plans.
