Thinking of Signing a New Lease?

A lease is a very important legal document that is a contract between you and your landlord. Before you sign a lease bring a copy into the MAC office and have the commissioner go over it with you. While the commissioner is not a lawyer and so cannot provide legal advice, she can let you know if some clauses are invalid or let you know some questions you should discuss with your landlord.

Winter Parking

Roads free of parked cars make snowplowing safer and more efficient. That’s why the City has a bylaw prohibiting you from parking on the street overnight in winter (from Dec. 1 until the end of March). If you park on the street overnight you could face a $40 fine – or maybe even end up getting your vehicle towed. If it snows, the snowplows go – and the City just never knows when that’s going to happen, so it passed the winter parking bylaw to make sure their fleet is good to go on any winter night when most of the plowing is done.

WELCOME TO THE MAC WEBSITE!

Welcome to the website for the Municipal Affairs Commission or the MAC. The MAC is the newest and largest of the five commissions within the Alma Mater Society (AMS) of Queen's University at Kingston. At the MAC, we have two major roles: first, to advocate on behalf of Queen’s students at the municipal level and second, to give back to the greater Kingston community through volunteer work.

On the advocacy side the MAC works with the city of Kingston on a variety of issues including property standards, fire regulations, and pedestrian accessible roads. The MAC also seeks to educate Queen's students on their rights as tenants. Every year the Golden Cockroach and the Key to the Ghetto are awards that are given out to the worst and the best landlords in the student housing area.

The volunteer side of the MAC gives students an excellent opportunity to interact with the larger community through a number of volunteer initiatives. Over three hundred students are part of Kaleidoscope, a big buddy program that pairs Queen's students with little buddies in elementary school. Every year the United Way committee raises thousands of dollars for local charities and the Volunteer Crew provides students with a variety of volunteer experience.

Kaitlyn, the MAC commissioner, is always around to answer your housings and Kingston community questions. Drop by the office in the AMS offices located in the lower level of the JDUC (on the corner of University and Union) or send an email to This email address is being protected from spam bots, you need Javascript enabled to view it
