The Reality of Hunger

There are 51 campus-based food banks in Canada.

Ontario has the most campus-based food banks at 18. Ontario also has the second highest undergraduate tuition fees in Canada.

Quebec has the second highest student population in Canada, but only has two campus-based food banks. Quebec also has the lowest ndergraduate tuition fees of any province.

In March 2004, student food banks served 3121 clients.

Campus-based food banks that reported the family composition of their clients indicated that 47% percent of users are single people. 44% of clients have children, of which 34% are single parents.

Food banks that reported income sources of their clients said that over 80% of their users supported themselves through a combination of loans and job income. This suggests that the amount of financial assistance available to students is inadequate to meet their basic dietary requirements.
