This email address is being protected from spam bots, you need Javascript enabled to view it Each year the AMS gives two Queen’s Professors the Frank Knox Award for Excellence in Teaching and two TAs the Chris Knapper Award for Excellence in Teaching Assistance. These awards are regarded as very prestigious within the University community as the entire process for the awards is student-run. The Teaching Awards Committee distributes nomination packages and promotes the awards. Students can then nominate their professors or teaching assistants. Recipients are selected based on the nomination, a visit to the classroom by members of the committe, and a short survey of the instructors ability, filled out by students in each class. At the end of second semester we host an awards banquet that celebrates teaching and recognizes all those nominated. This committee and these awards demonstrate that students care about great teachers.

They take a detailed and student oriented look at what areas in our learning environment need improvment and then provide practical steps to improve them. Their recommendations usually take the form of a report, which is then used by the AMS to lobby the administration and make steps toward improving the situation.

The committee is responsible for the promotion of student-faculty interaction, specifically through the organization of an ongoing novelty lecture series called ”The Last Lecture on Earth” that will be taking place on campus throughout the year. The Last Lecture series is in its third year and has grown into an important annual event for the AMS. This is an amazing opportunity to have direct interaction with amazing faculty and learn about the passions that drive them to be members of the academic world and teach students like us.
